The Black Hole Final State
We propose that in quantum gravity one needs to impose a final state boundary condition at black hole singularities. This resolves the apparent contradiction between string theory and semiclassical arguments over whether black hole evaporation is unitary.
متن کاملThe Final Merger of Comparable Mass Binary Black Holes
A remarkable series of breakthroughs in numerical relativity modeling of black hole binary mergers has occurred over the past few years. This paper provides a general overview of these exciting developments, focusing on recent progress in merger simulations and calculations of the resulting gravitational waveforms.
متن کاملFinal spins from the merger of precessing binary black holes
The inspiral of binary black holes is governed by gravitational radiation reaction at binary separations r & 1000M, yet it is too computationally expensive to begin numerical-relativity simulations with initial separations r * 10M. Fortunately, binary evolution between these separations is well described by postNewtonian equations of motion. We examine how this post-Newtonian evolution affects ...
متن کاملBlack Hole Final State Conspiracies
The principle that unitarity must be preserved in all processes, no matter how exotic, has led to deep insights into boundary conditions in cosmology and black hole theory. In the case of black hole evaporation, Horowitz and Maldacena were led to propose that unitarity preservation can be understood in terms of a restriction imposed on the wave function at the singularity. Gottesman and Preskil...
متن کاملFlares on the Black Holes
A Kerr black hole can flare quasi-periodically, if it is magnetically connected to the accretion disk. The flares extract the rotational energy of the hole. The flaring occurs because the hole twists the magnetic field lines beyond the threshold of the screw instability. Subject headings: black holes – magnetic fields
